It is possible that European settlers may have used the term “Wolf Moon” even before they came to North America.Īnother name for this time period was the Center Moon, from the Assiniboine people, because it was the middle of the winter season. It was traditionally thought that wolves howled due to hunger, but we now know that wolves use howls to define territory, locate pack members, reinforce social bonds, and gather for hunting. The howling of wolves was often heard at this time of year. They are only roughly aligned here with the months of the Gregorian calendar. Many of the names listed here are English interpretations of the words used in Native American languages. Some names listed here may reflect usage at one time in history, but may no longer be used by a designated group today. Additionally, a name for the lunar month might vary each year or between bands or other groups within the same nation. Note that for Native American names, each Moon name was typically applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, the month starting either with the new Moon or full Moon. The Moon names that we use in The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from Native American, Colonial American, or other traditional North American sources passed down through generations. Historically, Native American and other traditional names for full or new Moons were used to track the seasons. What time will the Moon be visible tonight? Whether chopped or corralled for the summer, leaves are high in mineral content, are attractive as they age and will draw earthworms to your gardens. At the end of the summer the leaves will be partly broken down into what British gardeners call “leaf mold.”Įmpty the bin before the next crop of leaves fall, spreading the dark, partly composted leaf mold around trees and gardens. Turning it isn’t necessary since you’re not aiming to produce finished compost here. Given a bit of moisture, the foliage begins to break down, aided by those earthworms. The key to success here is to water your leaf collection every couple of weeks should it not rain. A simple fencing enclosure, or even a box created of old shipping pallets will prevent the leaves from blowing with the warmth of the summer helps them to break down. Think of this as a playpen for earthworms. Should you not wish to mow leaves or put them through a shredder, the second way of preserving leaves is to corral them in an open bin for summer camp. The small chopped leaf pieces don’t blow away or form the same heavy wet layers that can suffocate plants. Once the leaves are mowed and collected they can be evenly spread on flowerbeds, around shrubs, and, of course, under trees. The first is to chop the leaves as they fall, and the easiest way to do this is with a lawn mower. There are two possible solutions that allow us to keep the wealth of leaves while keeping our yards well tended. And those wet, compressed leaves can smother small plants and kill areas of lawn. What looks natural in the woods appears messy in the home landscape. Left as they fall, leaves blow about the yard, collecting in odd corners and piling up around shrubs or perennials. Gardeners and homeowners don’t usually want their entire properties to look like the woods and fields, however. In the woods and fields, leaves fall, get compressed by snow and ice over the winter, and begin to decompose the following spring. Science proves what many would call plain old common sense. Research on the healthy growth of trees has shown that the best fertilizer and amendments for these plants is their leaves.
